Africa Managing Director

Overview

Spark is seeking a Managing Director to lead Spark’s growing portfolio of emerging governments and leading civic society partners across Africa to scale our impact from 160 villages to over 12,000 in the next ten years. Spark has spent eight years developing a model for families facing poverty to engage and lead in local village planning and collective action. Each village launches a local project from a farm to a school. Today we have demand from the Government of Rwanda for a national scale initiative and garnering demand from new regions globally.
 

The Africa Managing Director will be responsible for defining and building out our regional teams across Rwanda, Uganda and Burundi, with possible expansion through training partners. The Managing Director will work closely with the Board
of Directors and report directly to the Executive Director to ensure strategic plans are developed and executed against with excellence. As a member of the senior management team, the Managing Director will be responsible for team management, operational leadership and business development. The Managing Director will serve as a business partner to the Executive Director, advising on the direction of global programs.

 Location

Kigali, Rwanda or Kampala, Uganda with frequent travel.

 Key Responsibilities

  1. Business Development:

    1. Win in-country bilateral and multilateral contracts and/or subcontracts.

    2. Develop a new financing scheme for national scale program in phases, ie. establish a new financing proposal from the Ministry of Finance to the World Bank and cultivate stake holders. 

    3. Lead regional donor cultivation and management. 

  2. Program Management:

    1. Manage regional coalitions of partners. 

    2. Develop policy recommendations for government decentralization policies, local government, and funding partners.

    3. Strengthen operational efficiency through new technologies and strategies.

  3. Team Management:

    1. Cultivate senior leaders and manage departments, including but not limited to management, finance, and partnerships. 

    2. Coordinate East Africa teams, policies, and procedures.

    3. Develop a network of thought partners to connect senior leaders with for mentorship and advising.

You proactively seek out feedback and input from varied stakeholders and are able to rally teams around your initiatives. 


Qualifications

  • Experience managing teams in emerging nations.

  • Experience managing relationships with governments and/or bilateral and multilateral aid institutions. 

  • Has led operational expansion.

  • Desire to work in an entrepreneurial setting in systemic change initiatives and decentralized approaches to development.
