Global Health Corps is a leadership development organization that offers a yearlong paid multidisciplinary fellowship for emerging leaders, ages 21-30, through partnership with nonprofits and government agencies on the front lines of health, in Malawi, Rwanda, Uganda, Zambia, and the US.

The Communications Specialist will report to the Head of the Rwanda Health Communication Center in the Ministry of Health (MOH). S/he will be responsible for providing ongoing support for communications-related activities within the Ministry. The Specialist will collaborate with MOH departments to produce MOH content including briefs and press releases as well as support capacity building initiatives aimed at training MOH staff to better engaged with the media.


Responsibilities:

  • Develop feature stories and opinion pieces on various topics in the health sector in collaboration with leaders and experts to be published in local and international newspapers

  • Draft media talking points and questions and answers to guide the Ministry of Health leadership for press conferences, campaigns, or any health sector related events

  • Produce timely media briefs, kits, and press releases

  • Attend and document recommendations from communication planning meetings for all entities within MOH and its implementers

  • Build internal capacity to work with media effectively


Skills and Experience:

Items indicated with an asterisk (*) are required

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, public relations, international relations, sociology, or related field*

  • Preferred: Master's degree or equivalent in communications, journalism, public relations, international relations, sociology, or related field

  • At least two years of experience working in communications, media/journalism, external/public relations, or related field*

  • Experience creating media briefs or kits, press releases, message documents, and/or talking points*

  • Excellent writing skills with experience creating materials for publication, e.g., feature stories or opinion pieces*

  • Working proficiency in French

  • Experience with photography, graphic design, and/or web design

  • Experience managing an organization’s social media accounts

  • Experience working with or in a government or public health setting, especially in Rwanda

  • Experience in risk communication and/or crisis management

  • Willingness to travel

  • Ability to operate with minimal supervision and on tight deadlines

  • Team player, results oriented, innovative and committed to continuous learning

  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint

  • Excellent communication skills, including strong speaking, written, and editing skills
